Facelift

In older people, or those exposed to large amounts of sun or stress, wrinkled, creased skin can develop on the face, neck or forehead, along with fat deposits and folds around the jaw and jowls. And while a facelift can't stop the aging process, in many cases it can "turn back the clock".

Facelifts can be performed alone, or with other cosmetic procedures such as eyelid or forehead surgery. Most are done under twilight anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Depending on the area to be treated, facelifts usually involve incisions made along the hairline, which extend around the ears to the lower scalp. The skin is lifted away from the fat and muscle underneath. The muscle and supporting structures of the face are tightened by the doctor, and excess skin and fat are removed.

Swelling and minor discomfort lasts a few days, and stitches are usually removed within a week. Most patients are back to work in 10 to 14 days, and may resume their normal activities in about a month.
